Sam Jones As both a life-long musician and a committed film enthusiast, it seems only natural that my path would lead to the world of composing for the screen. My career as a composer began while playing guitar in rock and jazz groups during high school. I completed my undergraduate degree in USC's jazz guitar program, where I delved into not only jazz but classical composition, Brazillian musical styles, electronic music production, and the techniques of the 20th century avant-garde. All the while, my affinity for film never waned, as I further explored the works of such auteurs as Kubrick, Scorsese, Lynch, Herzog, Kurosawa, Fellini and the directors of the French New Wave. I have always gravitated towards filmmakers who tell stories in unconventional ways, plots that unfold slowly and mysteriously, and music that introduces unique and surprising textures. Ever since I began scoring films toward the end of my undergraduate years, it has been my goal to maintain a sense of wonder and innovation in my work while satisfying every project's individual needs to the best of my ability. In the non-musical realm of my life, I enjoy Russian literature, coffee, microbreweries, and biking. |
