FAQs

Does SMPTV offer financial aid?

At this time, the SMPTV program does not offer any tuition assistance in the form of scholarships, grants, teaching assistantships, fellowships or work-study.

However, financial assistance may be available through need-based loans from the USC Financial Aid Office. Please visit the Office of Financial Aid for more information.

How much does the SMPTV program cost?

The total cost of tuition for the year is approximately $40,000, but keep in mind that the cost of living in Los Angeles for that year can run between $10,000 and $20,000.

Can I work a part-time job while enrolled?

SMPTV is an extremely intensive program, and generally leaves little time for part-time work during the school year. In addition, students are expected to attend all classes, scoring sessions, and other events. Since many of these events happen in the evenings and on weekends, and the schedule changes from week to week, maintaining a job during the school year is logistically very difficult. For these reasons, holding a part-time job while enrolled in SMPTV is highly discouraged.

Do I need a GRE score to apply?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test. Applicants to the SMPTV program are NOT required to take the GRE.

What are my job prospects after SMPTV?

We do not have a job placement service; however, the SMPTV experience includes the opportunity to meet many industry professionals, which often leads to work prospects.

What gear/hardware/software do I need?

As access to lab time is limited, each SMPTV student will need his/her own computer and complement of software. Incoming students who do not already have a studio setup are encouraged to discuss the requirements with their instructors at the start of the year, as music technology changes rapidly.
